TEHRAN — November 1, 2026
Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Secretary, Major General Mohsen Rezaei, has warned that failure to hold the United States accountable for its actions against Iran could encourage other countries to launch attacks against the country without fear of consequences.
In an interview reported by Iran’s Nournews on October 31, Rezaei said that if the United States is not held accountable for its actions and the damage inflicted on Iran, other countries could receive the message that they can attack Iran without paying a price.
“If the US is not held accountable for these actions, the message sent to other countries will be that they can attack Iran without having to pay a price,” Rezaei said, according to Nournews.
Deterrence and Accountability
Rezaei’s remarks underline Tehran’s position that accountability and deterrence are essential to preventing future military attacks.
He said Iran was determined to end the conflict in a manner that would prevent any country from considering another attack against it. He also stressed that Iran would continue to defend what it considers the rights and security of its people.
The statement comes amid continuing tensions between Washington and Tehran and diplomatic efforts surrounding the future of the conflict.
A Wider Question of International Accountability
Rezaei’s comments also raise a broader question about the consequences of military action: if a powerful state can use force without facing meaningful accountability, does that weaken the deterrent effect of international law?
His statement reflects the Iranian leadership’s position. The wider question of responsibility for the conflict, including the legality of military actions and civilian harm, requires independent investigation and assessment under international law.
