Tehran, October 31, 2026 — Iran’s Supreme Leader and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei, has instructed senior military commanders to ensure that any level or type of enemy threat receives an “immediate, impactful, and geographically unrestricted response,” according to a report published by Press TV.
The directive was issued during a meeting with senior commanders of Iran’s Armed Forces. Khamenei stressed that maintaining intelligent combat readiness for a powerful confrontation with adversaries was essential to achieving maximum deterrence.
Iran says it will determine the terms of any renewed conflict
According to the statement reported by Press TV, Khamenei warned that if Iran’s adversaries resume military or terrorist attacks, the Iranian Armed Forces and the Iranian nation will determine when and under what conditions those attacks end.
The directive also calls for strengthening military intelligence, developing indigenous defence capabilities, improving military doctrine and tactics, and expanding defence and security capabilities through emerging technologies.
Military target database to be updated
In another significant instruction, Khamenei ordered a comprehensive update of Iran’s military target database.
The reported directive calls for ensuring that all physical and non-physical assets of what the statement describes as the “US-Zionist enemy” are within the reach of Iran’s Armed Forces.
The meeting also included reports from senior military commanders about readiness along the Persian Gulf coast, the Strait of Hormuz, the Sea of Oman and Iran’s northwestern and southeastern borders. These assessments and claims about military preparedness were presented by Iranian commanders, according to the report.
What the directive means
The wording signals Tehran’s stated intention to respond beyond a narrowly defined geographical theatre if it faces renewed military or terrorist attacks. However, the announcement does not itself confirm that Iran has launched a new operation or issued an order to begin an immediate strike.
The directive comes amid continuing tensions involving Iran, the United States and Israel.
THE WORLD’S UPDATE — Editorial Note
The distinction between a military warning and an operational order is important. Iran has publicly outlined how it says it would respond to future threats, but the announcement alone does not establish that a new military confrontation has begun.
