THE WORLD’S UPDATE | International News
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy has claimed that two oil tankers exploded after striking naval mines while attempting to navigate an unauthorised route through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
According to Iranian state media, the IRGC Navy said the vessels were travelling through a route that Iran had not authorised when they struck mines.
The statement was reported by Reuters on November 1, 2026.
Iran’s Warning to Ships
Iran has imposed restrictions on vessels seeking to transit the Strait of Hormuz and has warned ships against using routes it considers prohibited or unsafe.
The IRGC Navy has repeatedly accused some vessels of ignoring maritime warnings and attempting to pass through unauthorised shipping corridors.
Strategic Importance of the Strait
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime energy corridors. Any disruption to commercial shipping through the waterway has significant implications for international oil supplies, energy markets and global trade.
Independent Verification
Reuters reported the IRGC Navy’s statement but did not independently establish the circumstances surrounding the two reported explosions.
The identities of the vessels, the extent of the damage, the condition of their crews and the precise circumstances of the alleged mine strikes remain unconfirmed in the report.
