Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has warned Washington against attempting to create divisions within Iran, following reports that US Vice President JD Vance sent a message to senior Iranian security official Mohsen Rezaei.

Speaking to Al Jazeera on October 31, Araghchi said:

“If Mr. Vance sent a message to Mr. Rezaei, he should be asked why.

If their intention was to create divisions, that would be another mistake added to their long series of mistakes.”

Araghchi confirmed that Iran had carefully reviewed Vance’s message during high-level meetings. He described Washington’s effort to open a broader channel for dialogue as a positive step, but rejected reports suggesting that a meeting with American officials was imminent.

“We see no need to meet with the Americans at present,” Araghchi said, adding that Iran’s conditions were clear and that diplomatic consultations through mediators were continuing.

According to reports, Vance’s message was delivered to Rezaei through Qatari mediators. The full contents of the message have not been publicly disclosed.

The diplomatic exchange comes amid continuing tensions between Washington and Tehran, with Qatar and Pakistan involved in mediation efforts.

Araghchi said any decision on direct or indirect negotiations would depend on the United States addressing Iran’s conditions, which include sanctions relief, the release of frozen Iranian assets, reduced US military presence in the region and an end to hostilities across the region, including Lebanon.

He also reiterated that Iran was prepared for different scenarios and did not rule out the possibility of renewed conflict.

The central question remains: Is Washington seeking a genuine diplomatic channel with Tehran, or is its approach creating political divisions within Iran?

Iran has made clear that any negotiations must respect its stated conditions and national sovereignty.
